Go Karting - by Yi Xin

This is a post about the Go-Karting last Saturday, by Yi Xin...

Having to wake up early on a Saturday morning was definitely trying, given that I (and I’m sure others) barely had 4 hours of sleep the night before. The drive up to Sunshine was anything but boring, thanks to our momentary loss of way and the many many magazines found in Shu Wen’s car.

Upon reaching Ace Karts, we watched a 10 minute clip on dos and don’ts on the track. Veronica was listening hard, having never driven a car before! :) Then came fitting time, when we had to put on a black beanie like cloth (and look like a bunch of crooks as a result). Thank god Ace Karts provide fresh beanies to drivers! After which, we were given helmets according to our head size. Shu Wen had to wear an XS sized helmet, which the Ace Karts facilitator whispered that they were meant for kids :)

After getting into our respective karts, we went on a trial session to clock in our best laptimes. Thinking that the karts would only go a notch faster than bumper cars, boy was I pleasantly surprised when we zoomed about like maniacs. Seriously. It was difficult to control the steering wheel due to the lack of power steering, but as a result, one could really feel the power of the engine and the absolute control in maneuvering the kart! Damn, I was spinning around countless times as a result of going too fast round the bends, or pressing both accelerator and break pedals at the same time. But nevertheless, uber uber fun!!! Kai Yau clocked the fastest laptime of the group!

The next round we did as many laps as we could in a fixed time. My competitive streak got the better of me. Felt a great sense of satisfaction and smugness whenever I overtook someone. Not too long after, I would spin around the spot as mentioned above, karma you could say. Zoom zoom zoom. The wind in your face, water mist spraying about as you race through puddles, the sharp yet gradually comforting smell of petrol…. Go karting was absolutely exhilarating! Fabulousness, awesomeness and adrenaline rush all in a flash!

Craig (from RMIT) won, followed by Tristan, and Shu Wen. Shu Wen came in tops though, for being the driver with the greatest style and congeniality, having driven single handedly whilst dangling her other arm over the kart and waving to people around her for quite some distance (as observed by one Ace Kart facilitator)!

After go karting, we had lunch at Laksa King, a Malaysian restaurant that sold authentic dishes that were all soo yummm. A great end to the day I would say :) Go Karting for me on another day!
